Facebook and OpenSocial – The Numbers

So far it appears that Google’s OpenSocial still hasn’t impacted the Facebook application market. Facebook opened their platform to developers in May and there are already over 10,000 applications available. The rate of new applications continues to grow at an astounding pace. In the last month there were roughly 2,500 applications released for Facebook and only about 40 for OpenSocial. This low level of attention is indicative of a common belief that OpenSocial is not production ready. Also, MySpace, the main competition to Facebook has yet to implement the OpenSocial functionality. According to the New York Times article on Crowdware, there were over 800 applications released for Facebook a month after they opened their platform. The following chart shows the Facebook application growth over the last thirty days.

With a steady flow of new applications being released for Facebook, the platform continues to prove an excellent opportunity for everyone.
